The Quiet Long Middle No One Talks About
Honey.
Listen.
Most writing advice out here on the ol' interwebs assumes two things:
You're either out here banging your head against the keyboard because you haven't started yet
OR
You're doing the ultimate happy dance because you just typed, "The End."
So where does that leave the rest of us? The ones staring into the Act II abyss in sheer horror because what is supposed to go in that endless pit?
That's the part that nobody really wants to talk about.
The Long Middle.
The place where drafts stall.
Where motivation dries up.
Where life starts demanding our attention.
Where unfinished manuscripts pile up on hard drives and start to feel suspiciously like personal failures.
Where life starts demanding our attention.
Where unfinished manuscripts pile up on hard drives and start to feel suspiciously like personal failures.
Well, guess what?
You're not alone.
Here at Still Drafting, we not only talk about the Long Middle, but we walk straight into it with our heads held high and absolutely no idea what we're doing. Dance right through it like some sort of quirky, weirdo princess performing her personal theme song while the castle is on fire.
We don't shame. As a matter of fact, we're the least judgy people on the planet.
We don't point fingers. We pick ourselves up and brush the dust off that WIP waiting in that hard drive.
We don't preach about discipline we don't have, or do the "just write every day" talk.
We get it. We're busy people. We get stuck. We get the brain fog and try not to beat our heads on the keyboard while wishing the Writing Gods would give us one stupid word for the doc.
And around here?
We're just folks offering a helping hand. Sitting right with you in silence if you need it.
We're about trying to be the support that so many authors just don't have.
Because art? Especially of the wordy sort?
It's a lonely ass road.
So for now, feel free to drop a comment. Let me know what you think. Talk to me about what you think ought to be covered next. Just say hi (I'll definitely say hi back!). Take a look at my post about fanfiction and how it can help with WIPs. Whatever floats your boat.
Make yourself a home, hon. If you're still drafting, you're in the right place. 🥰
Until next time,
Elise
